Durkan uses three different construction methods on major £25million social housing project

As part of our involvement with the innovative Gentect partnership, Durkan Ltd has just started work on a major £25million affordable housing scheme in Fairview Road, Stevenage. The flagship scheme will provide 198 new apartments and houses for the Genesis Housing Group and is part of the first tranche of English Partnerships’ land disposal programme.

The attractive, high density scheme is being built on the site of a disused sports ground. It will provide a mix of 55 rented and 143 shared ownership homes, including over 100 Low Cost Shared Equity apartments for Key Workers. Situated within 200 yards of the railway station and town centre, it provides much needed housing in a prime central location.

In line with government policy encouraging innovative construction techniques in social housing projects, we are using three different types of construction on the scheme. Concrete frame is being used on the highest blocks reaching up to 10 storeys, some four storey apartments will be built by traditional methods, and timber frame is being used for two and three storey houses and three and four storey apartments.
