Durkan Limited to refurbish 1800's mansion scheme in WC1
Community developer Durkan Limited has been selected to undertake the £6.8m refurbishment of five Victorian mansion blocks in Holborn for St Pancras & Humanist Housing Association.
Dating back to the 1800’s, the Braunton, Bideford, Barnstaple, Dulverton and Dawlish mansions were originally designed for the use of barristers working near the 'Inns of Court' during the week before returning to their country houses at the weekend.
Durkan Limited will revamp the eighty-four flats to make better use of the limited space available and provide more useable kitchens & bathrooms. Improvements will also be made to the heating, joinery, plumbing, drainage and windows of the properties. In addition to the residential element of the scheme, each block will include commercial space on the ground floor.
The work will ensure that the blocks meet modern energy and insulation standards, as well as the government's Decent Homes requirements.
Robert Clark, Managing Director of Durkan Limited said: “We are delighted to be working with St Pancras & Humanist Housing Association on this historic and very well located site in central London. We will take special care to preserve many of the original features of the buildings such as the glorious terrazzo tiles. The essential modernisation of the mansions and the addition of the commercial space on the ground floor will create a wonderful new community in the heart of London.”
