Durkan Limited awarded £35million contract for first phase regeneration of Aylesbury Estate
Community contractor, Durkan Limited, has been awarded the £35 million construction contract for the first phase of regeneration at the Aylesbury Estate near Elephant and Castle, South London for London & Quadrant. The development will provide a tenure mix of 260 apartments which will achieve Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4.
Durkan will also construct a state-of-the-art resources centre providing updated facilities for people with sensory, neurological and physical disabilities, along with health and therapy services, adult education, employment support and IT.
Durkan will carry out the regeneration of the estate in 5 phases, the first phase valued at £7.8 million and started in September 2008 with an estimated completion time of two-years. As well as the specialist resource centre this phase will include the construction of 52 apartments up to 6 storeys in height and provides a mix of 26 apartments for rent, 11 shared ownership and 15 for private sale.
Robert Clark, Managing Director of Durkan Limited, comments: “We are very honoured to have been selected by London & Quadrant to construct the first phase of the Aylesbury Estate and firmly believe in their vision to transform the estate to improve the quality of life for residents and the area.”
The new buildings will utilise a single bio mass boiler to provide heating and hot water - significantly reducing the carbon footprint of the contemporary apartments and resource centre.
Two methods of construction will be used for the new properties, the apartments will be built using a reinforced concrete frame while the community resource centre will use an advanced wooden ‘Glulam’ frame for improved insulation and strength.
