Project information
Durkan Limited is the lead contractor for this 182 home development in East London. The redevelopment of the Thomas Road site will involve the demolition of the existing buildings and the design and build of five new blocks including a central twelve storey tower. The impressive new scheme, designed by architect Child Graddon Lewis, will provide dwellings for rent and shared ownership, and some private sale units, anticipated for completion in March 2009.
The project will include the construction of a piled retaining wall, excavation of underground car parking and new basement. Durkan Limited will also undertake the associated landscaping, paving and redevelopment of the canal-side frontage.
Durkan is currently in discussions with the client to include suitable forms of sustainable energy on site. One possibility is the use of biomass boilers linked to a centralized plant distribution system for hot water and heating solutions. In addition, the building has been designed to be highly insulated and oriented to maximize solar gain. The Thomas Road project will radically transform the area near Canary Wharf by providing modern, quality, affordable housing for the local community.
