Berger Primary School, Hackney Project information Durkan are currently constructing a new school building in Hackney to hold 472 children. The construction is on behalf of the Learning Trust, a not-for-profit company, which runs all the education services for the London Borough of Hackney. The scope of works for Durkan includes the construction of the new school building on a site which is adjacent to the existing, live school environment at Berger Primary School. Once the new school is complete and staff and pupils are transferred, the former school building will be demolished. In addition, all the existing areas of the school will be re-landscaped and a new multiuse games area will be constructed. There will be 15 additional classrooms, however the internal design allows for additional screening/partitioning of classrooms to increase the number of classrooms to suit the schools needs. This building aims to achieve the British Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) Schools 2006 Excellent rating. To achieve such a rating, the design incorporates Photovoltaic cells, small wind turbine and a green roof. The timber building structure is Programme for the Endorsement of the Forest Certification (PEFC) certified (each 1m3 timber panel stores approximately 0.8 tones of carbon).
