Redbridge Night Shelter, Ilford, Essex

Project information

Durkan recently undertook the design, refurbishment and extension of an existing homeless shelter for vulnerable people to provide eighteen bed spaces.

A new 2-storey semi-detached extension provided eight bedrooms, two of which had private bathroom facilities. Offices, a new reception, catering facilities and other ancillary area have also been provided.

Durkan also constructed a part 1 and 2-storey building to provide ten bedroom units with private bathroom facilities, a workshop facility and a utility room. The building achieved Code for sustainable Homes Level 3. To attain this rating the development includes ground source heat pumps, solar water heating, super insulation and daylight harvesting.

This project is part of the Government’s Places of Change programme to help improve accommodation, training and employment opportunities for local homeless people.
