Trees, Highgate, London Project information Durkan demolished existing houses to contract a new part 4-storey and part single storey extra care development, now known as Trees which takes its name from the many mature and protected trees which are present on the site. Durkan have provided forty one and two-bedroom extra care apartments, along with communal facilities including lounge spaces, internet access, activity room, café, a hairdressing salon, therapy room and beautifully landscaped communal gardens. The project was carefully developed in response to the site’s location within the Highgate Conservation area and achieves a sensitive relationship with its landscape and surrounding context. The building is designed to achieve a Level 3 rating under the code for sustainable homes guidelines, and benefits from a range of sustainable and energy saving technologies, enabling residents to enjoy significant savings. Durkan installed ground source heat pumps, which provide up to 32% renewable energy for the site. the building is also super-insulated to reduce heat and energy loss. Sedum roofs have been provided on all the single storey dwellings, offering sustainable benefits and enhanced visual amenity whilst allowing these parts of the building to become visually integrated within the landscape. To promote water conservation, Durkan installed a sustainable drainage system and rainwater butts, allowing surface water run-off to be collected and re-used where possible.
