Welcome Centre, Ilford, Essex

Project information

As part of the Redbridge Places of Change Programme to help improve accommodation, training and employment opportunities for local homeless people, Durkan demolished the existing Welcome Centre in Ilford and provided a new contemporary building. Situated on the lower floors, a Day Centre offers a range of services for the homeless including drug and alcohol support, counselling, vocational and life-skills training.

Above, the development provides living accommodation on the 2nd and 3rd floors, for homeless people from the local community.  Ancillary offices and communal areas have also been provided.

The development achieved Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3.  To attain this rating the development includes ground source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels which will provide energy for heating.

Peter Barber of Peter Barber Architects, was very impressed with the Durkan Project Team and commented “... we appreciate the incredible efforts that your team put into the project - they were great”.
