Durkan awarded £8 million contract by East Thames Housing Association

Durkan have been awarded an £8 million contract by East Thames Housing Association to construct a mix of much needed homes in Romford.

Durkan are transforming a former waste site into a vibrant community by constructing 78 apartments to be arranged around a quiet central street in Crow Lane, Romford. The new development will be constructed within four separate blocks in the style of townhouses, ranging between 3 and 4 storeys high. 39 of the one, two and three bedroom family homes will be for affordable rent and 39 homes will have affordable ownership options.

Designed by Baca Architects to complement the local surroundings, each townhouse will be divided into marionettes at ground floor with flats above, and expressed as a single house. To clearly identify entrances, each townhouse will be constructed from a different material from its neighbour from a carefully selected palette of four brick types.

The development will be constructed to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4. To achieve this, 20% of the energy used in the homes will be generated from a renewal source including solar roof panels that turn sunlight into energy. Each family unit will have a private garden, terrace or balcony and to encourage more sustainable transport habits, a car club and ample cycle storage will be provided. As well as landscaped green areas and parking space for 83 cars, a children's play area will also be provided.
