Durkan complete work on Shakespeare's Globe Rehearsal Studios

Durkan has completed the development of the Globe Education's new studios on behalf of The Shakespeare Globe Trust, the educational charity associated with the theatre. As part of the £6 million refurbishment, Durkan transformed the Victorian building into four floors of inspiring education and rehearsal space to be used by performing art students of all ages.

The historic building, now known as the Sackler Studio was recently opened by HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. On his visit, Prince Philip, who is a patron of the Shakespeare Globe Trust, observed students' movement class and spoke with the aspiring actors.

To transform the Victorian building, Durkan retained the original whilst renovating the internal area, creating four workshop studios to be used by students and theatre practitioners. Durkan also provided a rehearsal studio, which replicates the size and shape of the Shakespeare Globe stage complete with oak walls and state-of-the-art audio equipment. Lift and ramped entrances making the building fully accessible and a café for public use is now situated on the ground floor.

Patrick Spottiswoode, Director of Globe Education at Shakespeare's Globe commented 'The Sackler Studio is a valuable and much needed addition space to accommodate the many varied activities at Shakespeare's Globe. It allows even greater engagement with the local community and offers more opportunity for young and old around the globe.'

Every year, over 100,000 young people attend bespoke workshops and projects on the site at the Globe, from pre-school three year-olds to silver-haired students of the third age. Globe Education is the largest theatre education department in the UK, providing a programme of public events, workshops and courses.
