As well as retaining the original 6 storey façade of the Grade II listed former YMCA building, built in 1919, Durkan removed the one-time basement swimming pool and demolished the remainder of the building to make way for the new apartments and basement car park.
Durkan also constructed a new block on the disused carpark situated behind Greengate House to total 5 one and 29 two bedroom apartments for shared ownership with the remaining 30 for affordable rent. The low rise apartments are cohesively designed around a central landscaped courtyard to address privacy and lighting issues.
The development received an Eco Homes 'Very Good' rating. To achieve this a green roof and green wall have been provided to support the local ecology and improve overall air quality. The soft landscaping of the roof reduces the rainwater run-off and improves thermal insulation, reducing the development's carbon footprint. In addition metal cladding panels with moveable timber shutters guard against solar gain, also helping with insulation of the building.
