Well, two days ...
When our client and Gentect partner, Genesis, said it wanted to use a small site at Lawrence Hall in Stevenage to demonstrate the benefits of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) we readily agreed. And thereby took on the challenge of constructing two houses in just two days.
Lawrence Hall is one of English Partnerships’ first tranche of transfer sites, part of the Government’s Challenge 2 Funding. Challenge 2 Funding has a requirement to use MMC as much as possible and we saw this as an opportunity to underline MMC’s benefits of speed, environmental friendliness and quality.
Working closely with advisor Mtech, Durkan and Genesis identified London company, Future Generations, to fabricate the two, two-bedroomed houses. These were constructed in the closed environment of their factory (helping ensure quality control) and delivered on site fully finished with all internal fittings in place.
When the homes arrived on site, they were craned onto a pre-finished concrete foundation and all the services were fixed in place.
The houses are constructed from eco-friendly lightweight steel frame and clad in timber. They carry an Eco-Homes rating of Very Good and have very high U-values for thermal heat retention.
The result is two environmentally-friendly homes, constructed and finished to the highest quality standards. And a demonstration that, although Rome wasn’t built in a day, Durkan can do two homes in two days.
