Durkan project wins the 2011 'Best New Family Home' award

The Durkan-built Greengate House in Plaistow has won the 2011 London Evening Standard New Homes Awards for 'Best New Family Home' in the Affordable category.

The London Evening Standard New Homes Awards, now in their 20th year, celebrate the highest standards of skill, design and craftsmanship in today's new homes. Entries were judged by a panel of industry experts and 20 Evening Standard readers with an interest in homes and property.

The judges were extremely impressed by the look of the building, which they said would raise the standard of housing in the area. Award winners were announced on Friday May 13.

Developed on behalf of L&Q, the housing scheme in Plaistow offers a mix of 64 one and two bedroom homes in two blocks available through shared ownership and affordable rent. As well as retaining the original 6 storey façade of the Grade II listed former YMCA building, built in 1919, Durkan removed the one-time basement swimming pool and demolished the remainder of the building to construct the new apartments and basement car park.
