Durkan recognised by ROSPA for the fourth year running

Durkan's on-going commitment to site safety has further been recognised by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.

For the fourth year running, Durkan has won the prestigious Gold Award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. The Gold Award for Occupational Health and Safety recognises that Durkan have a proven track record for achieving a very high level of performance, demonstrating well developed occupational health and safety management systems and culture.

Health and safety is an integral part of our culture at all levels. Our commitment to safety is exemplified through our leadership whereby Ian Cresswell, the Director of Health, Safety and Environmental Management reports directly to the Chief Executive. Health and safety is the first item for all director board meetings.

Through excellent teamwork on site and by working in partnership with our supply chain, Durkan continue to raise hazard awareness and maximise on-site safety.

In 2008 Durkan introduced the Take Five initiative, which set 5 key challenges that employees and supply chain partners should all be working towards at every stage of our projects. To support the initiative all site signage was redesigned as well as our site induction training. In-depth training to employees and supply chain partners was enhanced and Durkan now reward staff who show outstanding efforts for their Health and Safety commitments.

The ongoing Take Five initiative involves communicating and co-operating together on site to make them safer and healthier. The five tasks demonstrate that worker involvement, respect, trust, co-operation and joint problem solving will make sites safer, benefiting not just staff, but the surrounding communities.
