National Youthbuild Awards

Durkan is proud to announce that two young apprentices, currently working on Durkan sites, have recently been presented with "Young Builder of the Year Awards" in the 2010 Youthbuild UK Awards held at the House of Commons.

Omar Cila, a CTI trainee electrician working on the Central Middlesex Hospital site, scooped a top construction industry award and has been named as "Young Builder of the Year".

Omar, a young African, fled his homeland in Guinea to build a new life in Britain, following a deeply traumatic event in which he and his parents were arrested and imprisoned after Omar's mother had taken part in an anti-government trade union rally. Aged just 16, unable to speak English and all alone, Omar managed to make his way to the UK where he has been able to start a new life.

Yiber Ajazi, a CTI trainee carpenter working on site at Normandcroft in Fulham, under the guidance of the Specialist Works Division, received a highly commended award.

Arriving in London from Albania six years ago, hardly able to speak English and with no qualifications, Yiba has worked hard, learning English and a trade, to turn his life around and has beaten stiff competition to become one of the best young builders in the country.

The awards were presented by Nick Raynsford, MP, President of Youthbuild UK who run the awards.

Durkan, working in partnership with the CTI, has provided numerous opportunities for young people, many of whom have come from a disadvantaged background, to turn their lives around and gain full time work within the construction industry.
