Kingsland Wharves | London

The £28.5 million construction contract carried out by Durkan on behalf of L&Q Housing Group has provided a 207 unit development in East London. The project is situated on the Kingsland Basin section near Regent’s Canal in Hackney.

The redevelopment of the Kingsland Basin site, which began in Spring 2010, involved the demolition of existing buildings and the design and build of five blocks rising up to 8 storeys. This impressive scheme, designed by JCMT Architects, has provided dwellings for rent, shared ownership and private sale and has achieved Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4.

Additional commercial space was formed through the restoration, conversion and alterations to the existing Grade II listed buildings around the site.

The project also included underground car parking and space for 233 bicycles, associated landscaping, paving and redevelopment of the canal-side frontage which included a footbridge and children’s play area.

To ensure disruption was kept to a minimum, Durkan closely liaised with canal boat occupiers who remained on the basin throughout the duration of the project.
