New striking homes set for Hertford

The old mill site on Tamworth Road in Hertford is set to be developed by Durkan, one of London and the South-East’s leading independent housebuilding and construction companies.

Durkan acquired the land with planning permission already in place, which will see 49 new houses in Hertford built on land previously used as a commercial and industrial estate.

The new development has facilitated the release of brownfield land that is no longer fit for purpose, enabling the previous owners to relocate into more modern accommodation.  This means that they’re able to continue trading in Hertford, both contributing to the local economy and maintaining a significant number of jobs for local people.

Andrew Morris, Managing Director of Tappenden & Co. Limited, said, “We are delighted to have passed on our interest in this site to reputable local housebuilder Durkan, who are already building high quality homes in Hertford.

This transaction has allowed us to move into modern facilities that will enable us to continue with our core business activities in Hertford for many years to come, whilst also enhancing and upgrading the services we provide.”

Durkan plans to construct this architecturally striking and eye-catching modern designed scheme with specially selected materials, that have been inspired by the area’s industrial history. The new properties will include 32 new three- and four-bedroom terraced homes, and 17 one- and two-bedroom apartments, creating homes for a broad spectrum of homeowners.  Durkan will begin construction on the site in Spring 2022, following dialogue with the local residents to ensure disruption is minimised during the project.

Bill Beyzade, Managing Director of Housebuilding at Durkan, said: “The Tamworth Road site is currently unused, and the existing buildings are unfortunately beyond economical repair.  The area therefore offers a fantastic opportunity for regeneration and is an ideal site on which to build new high-quality modern homes for Hertford.  The site is only a five-minute walk to Hertford East’s train station – which is great for connectivity and only a ten-minute walk to the centre of town, with the mix of leisure, culture and rich history that vibrant Hertford offers.”

Durkan will also incorporate new green spaces in the development’s landscape designs, boosting the leisure and environmental credentials of the former industrial site.  Plans include planted front and rear gardens, with low garden walls and shrubs along the roadside.  Communal gardens for the apartments will have trees, shrubs and a lawn with seasonal bulbs.

Bill added: “It’s really great to be able to continue growing our presence in Hertford with these plans for new homes.  This project builds on our existing development work in Hertford at our Stiles development in Bengeo, which we’re so proud of and where more than half of the new homes we are building have already been reserved.  We’ll be bringing the same high quality to our Tamworth Road project, and we can’t wait to start delivering the first homes there.”

As part of the redevelopment at the Tamworth Road site, Durkan is also making a series of financial contributions to support the local community.  This includes funding for local green spaces and parks, community centres,  health care, allotments and sports and play facilities.
