Aylesbury Waterside, Aylesbury
HP20 1URIn partnership with Aylesbury Vale District Council, Durkan worked with Hunters Architects to design and deliver a unique scheme for the town comprising, the creation of new restaurants, apartments and public square.
The square delivered new pedestrian links which were key to reinforcing and improving the previous existing circulation patterns in the town. In addition, there was a significant upgrade to the quality of the public realm around Walton Street and Exchange Street which extended the sequence of public spaces.
At ground floor level there features a strong design element being an arched colonnade from which the food and beverage units open out onto the new square and in addition, there are three commercial units. Floors one to four, have delivered 37 new, one and two bedroom apartments.
The project demonstrated Durkan’s ability and experience of working with a Local Authority partner to deliver a cross-subsidised income steam in lieu of a land value. On this project, Aylesbury Vale District Council opted to retain the commercial elements on the scheme to secure a long-term income source to potentially fund future services.
