Apprentice to Assistant Site Manager

To support the social value offering to our client on a project in Ealing for Clarion Housing, we employed 4 apprentices for the scheme. One of those was local resident, Brent Charles, who was found through our training providers – JBT Ltd.

Originally from Grenada where he began his building studies, he also gained work experience on construction sites through family members, and completed a degree in building technology, and in civil engineering.

Following several life challenges that put his career on hold, Brent was again able to continue his desire for further knowledge and experience, deciding to pursue a construction apprenticeship. We worked closely with JBT to ascertain Brent’s needs and understand what support he may need in his new role as apprentice Site Manager with Durkan.

At the Sherwood Close scheme, he was closely mentored and supported by our Project Director and site team, and although his apprenticeship was meant to last for 2 years, due to his knowledge in the field and excellent performance, he qualified in only 1 year – completing a Level 4 NVQ qualification in Site Management and Civil Engineering.

As Sherwood Close was completing (almost 2 years later), Brent’s position came under review. At the same time, our Refurbishment Director, Steve Page, needed support for the project Manager at a scheme for L&Q in Kingsland Wharves. Instead of going out to the market for recruitment, Brent was successfully interviewed by Steve and our Contracts Manager, Stuart Moore, and started his permanent position as Assistant Site Manager in April this year.

Brent’s resilience, enthusiasm and good liaison/communication skills align well for his current role, which focuses on the quality delivery of this retrofit project and will help develop his career in a market that is rapidly expanding.
