Southwark Council’s Peckham development opens its doors to residents

Southwark Council and Durkan, one of London and the South-East’s leading independent housebuilding and construction companies, held an opening event to welcome residents to a new development on Commercial Way on Tuesday 5 December 2023.

The development is made up of 74 council homes, eight of which are specialised wheelchair adapted properties, and 35 shared ownership homes.  Southwark Council has also provided outside communal areas, courtyards, and play spaces as part of the development. There are also 10 parking spaces, eight of which are designated for wheelchair users and two of which are for car pool cars.

Sharlene Asmah, who moved into one of the new homes in Commercial Way at the end of October, said, “I’m really pleased to be in my new home which is spacious, clean and a treat for the whole family. It’s great to have moved in before Christmas and means we get to enjoy spending time here as a family over the holidays.”

Cllr Darren Merrill, Southwark’s Cabinet Member for Council Homes, said,

“I’m delighted to welcome residents to these fantastic new homes in Peckham and see the difference these high-quality properties are making to people’s lives. These homes are excellently located and provide an enormous boost to the local area which has a high demand for truly affordable housing. I’m proud to hand over the keys to local residents and delighted to celebrate with them here today.”

Tim Carpenter, Managing Director of Construction at Durkan, said: “We finished building the 109 new homes at Commercial Way in September, but the milestone we’ve all been eager to see is residents moving in and enjoying their new homes. It’s been brilliant to hand over the homes today, after a few years of construction work to bring this project to life.

“Lots of people and families have been patiently waiting for new high-quality places to live, and this scheme delivers just that. Commercial Way has created homes for those in housing need, and those on Southwark Council’s housing waiting list. We wish residents a very Merry Christmas, and all the best for the future in their new homes.”
